All You Need To Know Is Already Close At Hand

Woman contemplating God
July 9, 2019 by Elizabeth H. Cottrell

Where are you looking for God and Truth? They might be much closer than you think. This post has been significantly revised since it first appeared on this blog in 2010.

Woman contemplating God

“Aren’t you afraid to talk about faith?”

Some well-meaning friends have warned me about getting into the topic of spirituality on this blog.

“It’s controversial.”

“It’s personal.”

“It’s too broad.”

Well, yes, these are all true, but if this is to really be a Heartspoken site about essential connections and uncovering the #HeartspokenLife, I cannot in good conscience omit a part of life that, for me and for many of us, is the sine qua non (“without which, nothing”), the foundation, an essential key, the source for everything else.

Where is God…really?

The only overriding Truth that I believe and wish to share as a starting point for any other Seeker is this: all you need to know or discover about God/Source is already close at hand, so stop looking for something “out there” that always seems just beyond your reach. Instead, let God’s Holy Spirit show you what’s right in your own backyard.

To be sure, God is everywhere, both inside and out.

And certainly, there will be external mentors, books, Scripture, art, and music that will speak to your soul, nurture your faith, and serve as guideposts. But I believe there is a divine spirit and power within each of us that we should recognize and embrace…a spirit that no one can take from us and which, if we let it, will guide us towards spiritual abundance.

The related truth that’s hard to swallow

If that divine spark is in us, it is in everyone else too. And we are called to recognize God in everyone, even our enemies.

Refocus your search

Don’t spend your life searching all over the world when all you need is close at hand:

 • deep inside your heart and soul, patiently waiting to be uncovered and released (Self-knowledge)
 • embodied in those you encounter every day (Connection)
 • reflected in the beauty and lessons of creation (Nature)

“Seek, and ye shall find…” Matthew 7:7 (King James Version)

Woman seeking God

Some well-meaning friends have warned me about getting into this topic…”It’s controversial.” “It’s personal.” “It’s too broad.” Well, yes, these are all true, but if this is to really be a Heartspoken site about essential connections, I cannot in good conscience omit a part of life that, for many of us, is the sine qua non (“without which, nothing), the foundation, the source for everything else.

On my Facebook profile under Religion, I call myself a Seeker. This does not mean that I am trying to be politically correct or afraid to use the more specific words Christian or Episcopalian. It simply reflects my deep interest in–and respect for–all religions and anyone’s genuine journey of faith and seeking a better understanding of their existence, their world, and their vision of a higher power. Surely Truth–with a capital T–transcends the labels we love to put on everything, so we should not be afraid to seek it, even if takes us into unfamiliar territory.

The only overriding Truth that I believe and wish to share as a starting point for any other Seeker is this: all you need to know or discover about Source/God is already deep inside you and part of you, so don’t agonize over looking for something “out there” that seems just beyond your reach. To be sure, there will be external mentors, books, Scripture, art, and music that will speak to your soul and nurture your faith, but there is a divine spirit and power within you that you should recognize and embrace…a spirit that no one can take from you and which, if you let it, will guide you towards abundance in all things, spiritual and physical.
