The Communicator’s Companion: Devotions for Speakers and Writers by Jean Wise

Sometimes a book comes along that provides a much-needed source of inspiration in just the right way at just the right time. This marvelous collection of devotions was just such a book for me, and I believe it will be for other Christian speakers and writers too, especially those who—like me—sometimes wonder if there’s anything left to write or say that anyone wants to hear.

Author Jean Wise, whose wonderful blog “Healthy Spirituality” has a robust following, writes with a warm and encouraging voice. The real strength of this book, however, is her ability to remind us—through effective use of scripture combined with well-chosen stories and shared vulnerability—that when we remember to turn to God for everything (our ideas, our inspiration, our opinions, and our words) we find the energy and guidance we need to write and speak with power and purpose.

In each essay of The Communicator’s Companion, the author plumbs the depths of some small aspect of writing or speaking with simple, recognizable stories in which we can easily imagine ourselves. She takes us by the hand and leads us to God—the true source of any ability we will ever have as communicators.

Each thought-provoking devotion includes a verse of scripture, a prayer, and a few suggestions for ways to apply the lessons or principles. These can easily serve as writing prompts.

“Writers are word painters,” she reminds us. “We reach deep into the dictionary of our minds and the thesaurus of our souls and with the help of the Holy Spirit, portraits of God burst out.”

I loved her sharing of Anton Chekhov’s guidance for writers:

“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”

Jean Wise’s theme throughout this book is clear: “Start with God first,” and trust that your words will touch others.

What set this book apart for me was her warm, confidence-building encouragement. It’s like she is sitting with you at your kitchen table saying, “I know this sometimes feels challenging, but let me help you connect with our Source of all creative endeavors. God will never fail us.”
