When I was researching and writing my book about note and letter writing, I ordered many books on the subject, and most are on the bookshelf above my writing station. I’ll be sharing these over the months ahead in case you might want to add any of them to your own library.
Knowing What To Say: finding the words to fit any situation by Patti Kelley Criswell was published (first in 2011 and again in 2018) by American Girl Publishing and is in their “Smart Girl’s Guide” series, so it’s clearly aimed at teenage girls.
But I found it refreshingly modern and helpful in real situations that we all encounter at all ages. As you can tell from the table of contents pictured above, it’s not specifically for letter-writing, but saying the right thing in person or in a note or letter is often about the same, don’t you think?
This book goes far beyond the typical expression of gratitude of sympathy and includes—as my book does—awkward and potentially embarrassing situations as well as conflict resolution. It’s a good reminder of times we often hide from but shouldn’t.
It has also reminded me that some things are best said face-to-face.
