In recent years—especially when we’re not expecting our children or grandchildren to visit for Christmas—my husband and I find ourselves tempted to pare down the amount of decorating we do for the holidays. My guest Annette Petrick shares her feelings about facing that situation. It’s amazing how powerfully those cherished traditions tug at our heartstrings! At a certain age, you have to decide whether to make things easier or continue traditions that are time-consuming or require more reaching, stretching and bending than you would prefer. So that was my conundrum when it was time to bring out the Christmas tree, yet again. What do you think I decided?

Karen – I’ll bet you enjoy the creativity shown by others with their holiday decorations. The point is to appreciate them, rather than necessarily being responsible for their doing. Merry Christmas to you and your grandson.

I have not put up a tree in more than a decade. I don’t get company (or very often), and I just don’t see the point. Plus I gave away all my decos. However, I do have the grandsons coming for a visit on Friday, so I put up lights a bit ago, and I brought my poinsettia home from the office. That’s as big as it gets, folks! I’m not a scrooge – I love the holidays – but I’d rather spend the energy (ahem) reading or crocheting. Happy Holidays all!
