Earth Day 2020 – 50 Years!

Earth Day our island home
April 22, 2020 by Elizabeth H. Cottrell

April 22, 2020. Today is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual celebration that launched the beginning of the environmental movement in 1970 and now is an ongoing reminder revere our island home and remember how important it is to treat it respectfully and responsibly so it  can sustain us far into the future.

The Christian faith tradition is among many that call for us to be stewards of the world God gave us. In an email from the Episcopal Public Policy Network this morning was this message:

Living as resurrection people does not make us immune to hardship. While living through a horrific pandemic, a burgeoning economic recession, and a looming climate crisis, it may seem strange or even inappropriate to celebrate Earth Day. Yet there is a promise to us that in times of deep darkness, light and life shall spring forth, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. We pray that you will find a piece of that light today. We pray that your Earth Day will be a celebration of God’s creation and a call to safeguard all that God has made. We pray for resurrection and abundant life this Earth Day and for every Earth Day to come.

Take action

Each of us can do our part to make the Earth more sustainable. Here are a few easy ways to make a difference:

  • Plant a tree
  • Sign an environmental action petition
  • Clean a vacant lot
  • Dispose of chemicals properly
  • Help build a bird habitat
  • Plant a garden
  • Clean up a local stream, river, or beach
  • Clean up litter in your neighborhood
  • Reduce the use of plastics
  • Spend more time outside

Happy Earth Day
