Word Of The Week: Adumbration

Faithful Writers Word of the Week blog title
January 25, 2019 by Elizabeth H. Cottrell

This week’s word is “adumbration.”

Adumbration

  1. a sketchy or faint impression or resemblance
  2. a foreshadowing or prefiguring
  3. a darkening or shadowing.

This word is derived from the Latin word “umbra” which means shade or shadow.

Examples of “adumbration” usage

Her childlike meekness carried with it the adumbration of power. Those who underestimated her soon learned the error of their ways.

His words were silky and smooth, but those who read between the lines felt the adumbration of his sinister agenda.

How would you use “adumbration” in a sentence?

Umbra is also a color. I thought it was familiar, so I looked it up.

You’re right! Here’s what I found for the color umbra: https://www.colourlovers.com/color/8A7E66/Umbra

And there’s a color “umber” in the same color range as above. Here’s what Wikipedia says: “Umber is a natural brown or reddish-brown earth pigment that contains iron oxide and manganese oxide. Umber is darker than the other similar earth pigments, ochre and sienna.”

      Interesting!
