What you see isn’t always what you get

May 31, 2012 by Elizabeth H. Cottrell

I am such a sucker for a heartwarming story! Most of us have seen a few videos displaying amazing talent from someone who didn’t fit our ideal of a star (Susan Boyle comes immediately to mind).

I just had to share this wonderful piece about a young girl and boy —Charlotte & Jonathan—who, through their vocal gifts and their loyalty to each other, captured the hearts of an entire audience and the hard-to-please judges (especially Simon Cowell) on Britain’s Got Talent.

The next time you feel put off by someone’s outward appearance, remember—always remember—what’s inside may surprise and thrill you if you’ll only give them a chance to show you.

I remember the faces (and sniggers) of the people in the crowd when Susan Boyle took the stage. Same goes for the people in this crowd. How awful for “the beautiful people” and for many of us, to think a certain thing before we get to know a person, before they even open their mouths. I have had a few of these impulses. I used to think “Shaved head, must be a Nazi skinhead.” Now I think, “Military.” Of course my perspective has changed. But that one previous thought led me to think that perhaps I’m having the same thought process for others. It’s sobering.
