8th Air Force Memorial at RAF

Maj. Jim Herbert with his WWII P-51 — My father, Captain James H. Herbert (Later Maj.) on wing of his North American P-51 D Mustang on September 11, 1944. He escorted Bombers to Leipzig targets far beyond normal fighter escort range. Instead of returning to Britain, mission continued on to land at Piryatin, Russia. Home via Italy. Second of only three such Russian missions. American flag armbands were isseed so Russians would not mistake downed American pilots for Germans.
