In the midst of your family celebrations, your Memorial Day sales, and your day off from work, don’t forget them…the men and women whose ultimate sacrifice secured the freedom to enjoy all the rest of this country’s blessings. And if someone gives you a Buddy Poppy, here’s the reason:
Here’s an excerpt from my Compass Points newsletter sent to subscribers yesterday:
This is Memorial Day weekend in the United States, and whatever your political persuasion, I hope you’ll take some time to reflect on the significance of remembering all those who have fought for freedom and their loved ones. My friend Ros Poplar (James R. Poplar III) said it beautifully in his article published this week in the Northern Virginia Daily:
On Memorial Day, no American should take their freedoms for granted. Instead, let us join together as one people, one nation under God, to honor our brothers and sisters who wear the uniform, the families that fear for them, and the ones who paid that terrible price for our liberty.
Here are a few more thought-provoking quotes for your Memorial Day reflection:
“Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.”
~ Adlai Stevenson
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”
~ Joseph Campbell
“Our honored dead yet whisper a warning to us, that freedom is not free, but must be paid for with sacrifice and heartbreak.”
~ James R. Poplar III
My heart is filled with gratitude.
