The perfect companion to my HEARTSPOKEN: How to Write Notes that Connect, Comfort, Encourage, and Inspire
I read many books when I was researching my own, and there are a few on my note-writing bookshelf that stand out as valuable companions, either as a resource or a source of interest or information. Today I want to shine a spotlight on a book from Hallmark that came out 20 years ago, but it’s still an outstanding and easy-to-use guide for writing both personal and professional notes: On a Personal Note: A Guide to Writing Notes with Style by Angela Ensminger and Keely Chace. Here’s what the authors promise:
“This book was written with one goal in mind—helping you write notes that you feel great about. It’s that simple.“
They fulfilled this promise.
First of all, it’s visually appealing, and Hallmark’s signature quality is evident in the colors and designs on every page, right down to the addition of a place-holding ribbon. The interior layout is designed for ease of use in finding exactly what you need from the Table of Contents without having to page through.

Next, the section on each type of note includes a template with clear explanations of what should go in each part of your note, reasons and etiquette related to that genre, and lots of sample wording, idea starters, tips, tricks, inspiration, and suggested alternative words and phrases to make your notes shine. The section on Business Notes was impressively clear and helpful.
At the end, like icing on the cake, the authors include considerations for choosing stationery, instructions for proper addressing of envelopes, tools for personalizing your notes, and more.
On a Personal Note: A Guide to Writing Notes with Style is a hands-on guide that takes the reader far beyond commonly used words and phrases to make your personalized messages stand out—whether you’re writing a business memo or a heartfelt note to a friend. The authors did a beautiful job of balancing the rules of etiquette with the need for authenticity and uniqueness of personal style.
