Note Writing Can Heal The Sender Too

ink, pen, and stationery
March 11, 2022 by Elizabeth H. Cottrell

Once asked what action he would recommend if a person were to feel a nervous breakdown coming on, famed American psychiatrist Karl Menninger (1893-1990) replied: “Lock up your house, go across the railroad tracks, and find someone in need and do something for him.”

One more reason to write personal notes!

Over time, I’ve shared lots of articles focusing on the impact a personal, handwritten note can have on its receiver. The short video below, however, sheds light on another powerful benefit, but this one is for the sender too. It’s the story of Jodi Ann Bickley who, during a very dark moment struggling with depression, found light and hope through writing to others who were also struggling in various ways. She founded “One Million Lovely Letters” and has written thousands of letters to strangers who have emailed her to ask for help. The project has also resulted in a book of the same name (See below).

Thank you to my sister, Sarah C. Albritton, for sharing this wonderful video with me. She knows how passionate I am about writing personal notes.

I invite you to join our Facebook group:

The Art of the Heartspoken Note

We share articles and videos like the one above with a goal of encouraging more people to touch others through the simple, but powerful act of writing a personal, heartspoken note.

“Love cures people – both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.”
~ Karl Menninger, American Psychiatrist (1893-1990)
